Cultural misunderstandings hinder Asia business!

(Headline of Vietnam News, Vietnam’s leading English language daily, on 12.9.1997)

What does this mean?

A survey among 3.000 Asian business people in 10 Asian countries by the Far Eastern Economic Review (FEER) Weekly from April – June 1997 came up with the following results (from FEER No. 37, 1997):

"Almost 100% of the survey group put openness, flexibility and cultural understanding at the top of the softer side of successful management in Asia.”

"Some 63% of the survey group report that cultural misunderstandings have actually stopped projects and 50% hold that cultural differences have hindered business development in Asia.”

"Two-thirds of the executives suggest that connections are more important than strategy.”

"Two-thirds of the executives suggest that the universal goal of making a profit can overcome cultural differences – but seems clear that there are times when that goal is not understood the same way.”
